Where are the Musicians?

We live in a digital world and everything is convenient, fast and done with a click. This is also true for much of the music that we hear today and how it is produced.

Musicianship is down for one simple reason, it is harder. It’s that simple. When recording in the studio, if you need a orchestra, you simply pull it up, make the right clicks and you have all the orchestra you need, it’s simply amazing what you can do now.

Part of me longs for the day when you had a bass player, keyboard player, drummer, guitar players and horn section all have to come in, play their parts from a chart or by ear and something special had to happen between each part to have a unique track.

That is not the reality anymore, maybe accept for two genres that still require such a interaction…Jazz and Gospel music.

Particularly for African Americans, these are the only two music genres that I can find contemporary true musicianship and I mean the next generation coming up.

There is incredible music being made through technology but I really miss the time when everyone in music could play an instrument. There was just a discipline there that you just don’t see anymore.

Believe me, I love the new  music technology, I’m not crazy enough to hire a whole band when I can create a composition by myself or with very little assistance. But I must say there is no greater feeling in the world  than when I’m playing with a live band.

It sort of reminds me of a comedian making movies versus being on stage and getting that immediate and intimate response.

I encourage all of you music producers that have gotten a little lazy, as I have, because of the technology, take a little time to gig out with a live band or pull out the instrument out of your closet you have’nt touched in a while.

Bring out that musician that you truly started out being and rediscover a feeling  you may not have had in a long while.

Towerlight News: New Music/New Artist

Towerlight Records is real excited about the new music and new artist that are coming on the horizon.

Gospel Rapper Lady C has teamed up with gospel music producer FrostByte, a young up and coming talent that is the best kept secret in the music business.” Their latest single, Who he says I am, is going to be a hit, no doubt about it”, says Ronald(Tyke) Oliver.

Also coming is gospel rapper and vocalist Karyzthma, which Towerlight has released it’s initial video for the song, Trust in Him, and now plans on releasing the single and a second video version of the song this summer and the initial response has been fantastic.

Up and coming, gospel music producer and vocalist Chris Brownie rounds out big the picture with new music to be released soon,”This guy is amazing and I can’t believe he does’nt realize how gifted he really is, I ‘m a fan”,says Ronald(Tyke)Oliver creator of Towerlight Records. Look for the song, High and Lifted Up, from this outstanding songwriter and musician.

Towerlight Records is positively independent music, and has a great lineup this summer and fall 2012, so to all our fans, put on your seat belts, were about to blastoff!

To God be the Glory!!

Quality never goes out style

The Beatles, Lionel Ritchie, Billy Joel,Stevie Wonder,Walter Hawkins, all of these people have something in common..quality!

If you are not a fan of any of these artist, that’s OK, but there can be no doubt that these artist are examples of working hard to perfect their craft and deliver a quality product every time.

There was a time when artist would work on an album, the goal was to have each and every track be as good as the last one.

The classic albums that I possess allow me to put in the disc and never have to worry about skipping anything, just let it play and play and play.

Some of the newer music artist within the last decade, not all, seem to have one single have a little success, then they start to wear sunglasses at night, have a entourage as large as a football team and spend all of their money before most people know who they are.

I visited a record store not too long ago( I know it’s hard to believe their still around). I went to the jazz section and looked up Miles Davis, and now I know why they called him Miles, because the section was a mile long (ok bad joke but you catch my drift).

Album after album after album of classic quality music was on display.

Quality music last forever. Everytime I go into an elevator, grocery store, doctors office or hear music on half of the commercial advertisements on TV, I am reminded of just that fact.

If you are a music producer, independent artist or involved with an indie label, what will set you apart everytime and gaurantee success in the music business is quality.

Music producers gotta love music

Are you in it for the money? fame? recognition? if so, you are in the wrong field. We all want these things at some point in our lives, well for me maybe not the fame so much, but if you want to be a successful music producer, music artist or music business owner, my advice to you is be a real music lover.

I run into so many so called music producers who only know or express interest in one genre or style, and in many cases they don’t even know the history of that one.

It’s OK to have your preference or your musical taste, but what is unacceptable to me is not knowing your craft or the history of it.

I have artist come to me that say I’m interested in the music business, I always ask them are you willing to work for nothing?

I usually get a blank stare.

I have kids that come that “want to hook up”, they say, “I got beats”. I say, that’s great, have you read the autobiography of Berry Gordy? What about Quincy Jones? Do you know who wrote Thriller, the best selling single of all time?

If they look lost I usually tell them to go to Barnes and Noble, read and look these facts up, 90% of the time I never hear back from them.

My point is, if you want to be successful at anything you have to have a real passion for it, which means you know everything about it or at least want to know.

If you ask someone about motorcycles who has a real passion for them, they know the history, makes, models, parts, latest news and publications and the look in their eyes when they speak on the subject makes it obvious that know one had to make them find that information and they would do it for free.

If you are a music producer, those in the music industry that have accomplished something, will not respect you if you don’t know the language, history and latest information about the craft.

If you want respect and to be successful in the music industry… you gotta love music.

Towerlight News: New Video featuring Lady C

If you are a true gospel rap fan and want to hear a raw freestyle from a rapper that can spit with the best of them, you have got to check out the new video by Lady C presented by Towerlight Records.

The song “Who is Lady C” confirms that just because she loves this genre there is nothing strange about her relationship with God almighty and those that think so need to step off.

She is also careful to point out she started out as a sinner and it is because of her belief in Jesus Christ she has come into her own. The song ends up answering the question, “who is Lady C, whoever God made me to be”!

The content is awesome, straight to the point and the beat is hard driving, thick and bouncy. “It reminds me of the way rap used to be, with serious content and flow that gets to the point’, says Ronald”Tyke”Oliver of Towerligt Records.

The song is short and sweet , an instant classic and the video compliments the content like a glove. A nice addition to her growing resume of hits and something her fans will be very proud to own.

Look for the single on Itunes coming soon.

Towerlight News: Karyzthma Video (Trust in Him)

The new short clip video presented by Towerlight Records introducing their new artist - Karyzthma, a gospel rapper and vocalist from the Midwest has just hit the Internet.

The song “Trust in Him” has a smooth urban melodic sound with a thick beat that will have one tapping their shoes or bobbing their head, however, the content is thought provoking and speaks to the struggles we all have in trusting in our own will or surrendering to the Creator.

Simply put, gospel fans will love the content, hip hop fans will love the urban beat and r&b fans will love the smooth slick sound.

“We are extremely excited about this new artist because we feel he will reach a broad audience and also will be saying something at the same time”, says Ronald”Tyke”Oliver, music producer and creator of Towerlight Records.

Look for the new video on YouTube and for new music coming soon from this promising talent.

Is Autotune better or worse for music?

Is AutoTune better or worse for music?

I remember the real master of the computer voice, Roger Troutman and how he mastered the Voice Box back in the day. I had all his records and was amazed at the uniqueness of the instrument he used and the melodic sound it had.

This of course was before Autotune which is a similar sound and effect but much easier to use. With the Voicebox there was much more skill involved as you had to sing the note and play it on the keyboard simultaneously.

We all know since the success of T-Pain and others in the industry using this technology, Autotune’s popularity has been off the charts.

For a while you were hard pressed to find a record where someones actual natural voice could be heard. It has subsided some but still a very much used product on recordings and almost a must have for independent artist.

In my opinion, Autotune is just like any other technology that has come through the music industry…It’s all in how it’s used.

My musical mentor Quincy Jones said it best, no matter how much technology you have, if you don’t have a great song, talent, a good mix, catchy hook and melody, it does’nt matter what you use.

Those that cannot truly sing, absolutely love Autotune! However, they still must have all of the above mentioned elements to have a great song.

I love Autotune, I love that sound and effect, but I love it as much as I love the synthesizer, electric bass, drum machines or any other technology that came before it.

It’s just another music tool in the musical tool shed, no more, no less.

Towerlight Review: BustaBrowne/Rearview EP

As I went to hear my good friends latest EP album called “Rearview”, I was struck right away by the slick look of the album cover.

My first thought to myself was,”Busta’s not playin!”. I was right.

I click on the title track and right away I was engaged into slick production, a smooth beat and a melodic sound that made me realize what an awesome thing to have such music and glorifying God at the same time. The best of both worlds for me.

I click on the second track and I get the same result. The third and the fourth, you get where I’m goin…I absolutely love this collection!

My only regret was that Busta teased us by only giving us four tracks. What’s the saying?..Leave them wanting more!

Well, that’s exactly what he did.

I text him and told him how jealous I was that he had such a cool album.

I have known Busta for years now and I think this is his best work to date. None of the tracks sound the same but they go together like peanut butter and jelly.

If you have not downloaded this album, like Nike says, JUST DO IT!

Now, I have to go and create some tracks quick cuz..BUSTA’S NOT PLAYIN!

Towerlight Records: All about the Positive

I don’t know about you,but I listen to music to feel good in my spirit, feel good about life and generally just to make me feel happy. Now before you think all I listen to is Mary Poppins, I love the head boppin funky, smooth and  jazzy stuff too. I guess I just like to emphasize the good mood of a song or tune.

I find it hard to understand those that listen to music to get angry, or sad or profane. It’s just hard for me to get that. Even back in the day when listening to early hip hop, the Sugar Hill Gang, Whodini or Kool Moe Dee, it just seemed to me more about fun and a cool slick beat.

Now whats happening in music, with all of the hidden messages, slanderous and profane words, and degradings of women, I just just don’t understand what is enjoyable about it.

Whats really sad is that some of the music tracks I hear are super creative, melodic, tight beats that if it were’nt for the content, I would be definitely buying and bumpin in my CD player or Ipod.

Our mission at Towerlight, is to produce Independent music and Independent artist that give the head boppin, slick beat, entertaining and down right good music experience to our fans, without the other negative stuff that will take them somewhere they don’t want to be.

That’s our niche and we are very proud of that.

Why eat a juicy apple with a worm in it.

Towerlight Profile: Jerry “BustaBrowne” Simmons

There are just a few words to describe my good friend, Jerry “BustaBrowne” Simmons, spiritual, musical, diligent, and amusing, but the best one that comes to mind is..Awesome. This talented music producer, songwriter and artist is just the latest gem we want to present.

In 1980, raised in Gary , Indiana was a boy born who had a dream to be a gospel songwriter and artist. He was influenced by so many greats like the Winans, Commissioned’s, Fred Hammond and Mitchell Jones as well as some secular artists like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Al B. Sure, BabyFace, and Boyz II Men.

The inspiration started to build when he noticed the writing credits on some of the popular songs he liked kept coming up on the cassettes and CD jackets. Names like Fred Hammond, Mitchell Jones, Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton, and BabyFace. He was so fascinated by how some of the writers and producers were artist too. So in 1992, at the age of 12 years old he began songwriting and found out that he wanted to sing more.

He attended Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts and was a Visual Arts major. He wanted to be there for vocal but his mother wanted him to get better in drawing because her gift was in Visual Arts.

BustaBrowne’s dad was a skilled bass player and sang with many musicians and groups around the Chicago land churches. In 1995 at the age of 15, he noticed that music was calling his heart. BustaBrowne learned how to make musical compositions on the computer during lunch hours on a Apple computer and a Roland keyboard. He got with his classmates and they begin to experiment on how to lay down tracks. Always fascinated by groups like Boyz II Men, 112, Commissioned, and Jodeci he would jump in groups and sing in the hallways harmonizing with them but wouldn’t join the group because of his respect for his mother’s wishes to sing at the church.

Busta and his younger brothers and sister would practice around the house with Commissioned type harmonies and sung a church also. At Emerson, he often found himself around a group called Adagio. Almost every lunch hour he would be in the hallways or band practice rooms adding his parts to the group.  This led to later on starting his own gospel group called High Praise.

In the year 2000 he bought his first workstation or “beat machine” and would be up all night long reading and making beats. He found new inspiration of making music and beats through the productions of Warryn Campbell, Dawkins & Dawkins, Tonex, and Rodney and Freddie Jerkins. By 2003 he learned that everything is being done on the computer and that the access to  having your own home setup is reachable. While in a local Guitar Center he met a music producer named TyeHill of the Productionix. Tye convinced Busta that he should purchase Reason and gave him a few lessons on it.

That changed his musical life forever. So he purchased a new computer, Pro Tools, and Propeller Head Reason to get started on his dream.

2004 marked many changes in his life and wanted to give up on his music career. His longtime friend and later wife, encouraged him and supported him to go forth. He later purchased better quality equipment and sounds and to better his gift. Also longtime Emerson classmates Terrell Lockett, Jason Carpenter and Robin Coley would offer their skills into helping BustaBrowne’s journey into a better musician and producer. During the age of MySpace he was blessed to feature a music track on Gospel Recording Artist Tonex’s blog of August. Later he reached out to 2x Stellar Award Nominee, Terri Carroll and Claude Deuce who also later in 2012

In the year of 2007 he met a few colleagues by the names of Jesse Blackmon, Aaron Green, and Stephen Powers. They all formed a media and production company called The Beat Fakulty, LLC. This was a good move for everyone because they all learned different styles of music, mixing techniques, business skills and becoming better musicians. Busta found himself learning more and also gaining new long term friends.

Due to difficulties in business, in 2009 the Beat Fakulty decided to disband but on good terms. This moment in life called for a decision to be made and things turned out better than they all hoped for.

Today, BustaBrowne has his own music studio called studio833 and production company, JerMar Music Group. He has been trained at MIW in Chicago and has been under the teachings of Grammy Award Winning producer, Rico  Lumpkins, Engineer/Producer/Chuck Kawal and Engineer/Producer Andy Bosnak.   He was blessed to work and be around artists, songwriters, and producers like Dwayne Coleman, Reggie Foster Jr., Michael Joiner, Terri  Carroll, Terry Garmon, Pharis Evans and Armar’rae Hill .

Busta later produced Tate Music Group’s artist: HGA entire album and is working on many other albums coming out in the future.

Now we anticiapate a solo debut album with Towerlight Records that we cannot wait to promote and bring out to the WORLD!

Definitely don’t take your eyes and ears off BustaBrowne, there is no stopping this phenomenal talent.
